history;[/i] Sky was born on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, Texas. Her mother died in childbirth, and her father was always...out. So, Sky was raised by her 6 elder brothers and her slightly deranged grandfather. As soon as one of the kids turned 11, they "moved" to England to live with Auntie Ray. Well, technically, the child "moved", got his letter from Hogwarts, went for term, and always returned stateside for the hollidays. Auntie Ray didn't particularly enjoy children. Luckilly, she only had them one day of every year.
So, the same happened for Sky when she got to that point. However, the difference was that Sky was the most hardheaded of all her siblings. No matter what Grampa said, Sky refused to fly in a muggle plane to get from Texas to England. Now, I said they lived on a ranch. I didn't say what kind of ranch it was. Grampa bred and raised magical beasts. He also had a safe haven for all magical creatures. Centaurs, Hippogriffs, Winged Horses, Unicorns, Dragons, and the occasional Troll were normal to find on the ranch. To Sky, though, there was only one creature that meant anything: the Thestral. Her love for them caused Grampa to give every one on the ranch to her as a present.
So, instead of flying in a plane or even riding the Hogwarts Express, Sky rides a Thestral. She always has and probably always will. She worked out a deal with Professor McGonagall her first year: she would ride a Thestral to and from school, board it (them) in the Black Forest and in return, help the Care of Magical Creatures teacher in anything and everything that was asked of her. It has been a pain a time or two, and the Headmistress threatened to take away her priveledge a few times for misdemeanors, but that's another story for another time...
